Having done several of the 'Old A30 Revisited' series of caches,
I thought I would place some on bypassed sections of the other
major route into Cornwall - the A38.
The A38 is formally known as the Exeter to Leeds trunk road,
although it actually runs from Bodmin in Cornwall (where it joins
the A30) to Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, a distance of 292 miles
(470 kilometres).
The section at Latchbrook, immediately west of Saltash, has
actually been bypassed twice. The section that runs adjacent to the
short piece in which the cache is located was the first 'bypassing'
in order to widen the road and avoid a nasty bend and dip in the
road, and since the opening of the Saltash Tunnel in 1988, that
piece is now used as a slip road for west bound traffic joining the
A38, and part of it for local traffic travelling east bound into
Saltash, now designated the B3271.
The cache is NOT accessible from the A38
or from the west bound slip road. You will need to take the route
of the old A38.
Although it is a real cache-n-dash, the area is used by drivers
to stop and have their lunch away from the surroundings of the
nearby Saltash Services. If you have a bit more time, there are a
footpath and a bridleway that run down each side of the Latchbrook
if you want somewhere to stretch you legs or walk the dog.
Only room for small swaps/TBs.
