Danish food served in a rich traditional atmosphere
Here stood Ye Old Danish Inn, for more than two decades serving
fine traditional Danish (and American cuisine). Ted Lind opened his
family business at the busy intersection of Hacienda Drive and the
State Highway in Scotts Valley catering to the bustling drive-by
traffic. Soon the reputation of the Inn for fine dining drew in
customers all the way from Santa Cruz and even Los Gatos. But in
the mid-1950's the new State Highway 17 bypassed Scotts Valley and
the handwriting was on the wall. In the diminished market that
followed, Ted Lind finally decided in 1965 to close the inn, sell
the property, and with the proceeds enjoy a well-deserved
retirement. Sadly, fate decreed otherwise. The new property owners
intending to build a Shell Service Station at the busy
intersection, wasted no time in demolishing the old restaurant. The
sight of this was almost too much for Ted Lind to bear and he could
not refrain from walking out among the ruins of his life's work. He
mis-stepped upon a fallen timber and fell to his death in 1965. Ye
Old Danish Inn now lives on only in relics like the old postcard
above, and in the minds of we who ate there and enjoyed the Inn's
hospitality. A fellow worker at Santa's Village and a former
waitress at the Inn spoke to me of the days she served Alma and Pat
Hitchcock (Alfred Hitchcock's wife and daughter) but that's a story
for another time and another cache.
