ABOUT THE CACHE AREA
About 1 mile to the east of Galbally village stands the remains of
a Franciscan Abbey which was built in 1471. The Franciscans
established this priory on the banks of the Aherlow River in the
13th century. It's name is derived from "Mura na mBrathair" - "The
Friars' Enclosure".
The Abbey held a strategic position on the main road from Kilkenny
and Cashel to the South West of Ireland.
In 1472, for reasons not recorded, the Abbey was burned. However,
it was reestablished soon afterwards and flourished for the next
century.
The remains today show the church and tower which are complete, but
nothing remains of the convent which stood beside it.
THE CACHE
22-Aug-2008 : Upgraded the cache to a 0.75 litre camouflaged
"Tupperware" box from a 35mm film pot. Also added a pen and some
swapsies. I have also put in a scratch card for the next
visitor!
When placed it also included a Slug TB.
