A Praça de Santa Maria é um dos marcos mais
importantes na definição da estrutura urbana da Vila de Óbidos e
uma das praças renascentistas mais interessantes em Portugal.
Desde meados do século XVI esta Praça é o
coração da Vila, sendo palco das principais cerimónias religiosas e
civis.
Com a profunda restruturação da malha urbana de
Óbidos, realizada no período renascentista por ordem da rainha D.
Catarina de Áustria, mulher de D. João III, a Praça de Santa Maria
transformou-se num dos principais símbolos da vila, sendo ainda,
para o seu tempo, uma das maiores praças públicas do país.
Em torno desta praça encontram-se alguns dos
principais edifícios, nomeadamente a Igreja de Santa Maria; os
Paços de Concelho manuelinos, que também serviram de cárcere e
tribunal; o Solar da Praça (o palácio mais prestigiado da vila a
seguir ao Paço dos Alcaides); o Solar dos Aboins, imponente
construção em cantaria, do século XVIII, mandada executar pelo rei
D. João V de modo a que a casa tivesse condições de receber a
Família Real; e o Telheiro, espaço público já referenciado em
documentos do séc. XV, e que serviu de mercado e de balcão de honra
às principais cerimónias.
Frente à Igreja de Santa Maria encontra-se o
principal chafariz da Vila, mandado instalar em 1575 por ordem da
Rainha D. Catarina. A água corrente neste ponto de abastecimento
provém da localidade de Usseira, a cerca de três quilómetros,
percorrendo um aqueduto que se encontra no exterior da
muralha.

The Square of Saint Maria is one of landmarks most important in
the definition of the urban structure of the Village of Óbidos and
one of more interesting the renascentistas squares in Portugal.
Since middle of century XVI this Square is the heart of the
Village, being palco of the main religious and civil
cerimónias.
With the deep restruturação of the urban mesh of Óbidos, carried
through in the renascentista period for order of queen D. Catherine
of Austria, woman of D. João III, the Square of Saint Maria still
changedded itself into one of the main symbols of the village,
being, for its time, one of the biggest public squares of the
country.
Around this square some of the main buildings meet, nominated
the Church of Saint Maria; the Paços de Concelho manuelinos, that
had also served of jail and court; the Solar one of the Square (the
palace more sanctioned of the village to follow to the Paço of the
Alcaides); the Solar one of the Aboins, imponent construction in
would sing, of century XVIII, ordered to execute for king D. João V
in order that the house had conditions to receive the Family Real;
e the Telheiro, referenciado public space already in documents of
séc. XV, and that it served of market and balcony of honor to the
main cerimónias.
Front to the Church of Saint Maria meets the main chafariz of

Catherine. The current water in this point of supplying comes from
the locality of Usseira, about three quilómetros, covering an
aqueduct that if finds in the exterior of the wall.
