Geocache Description:

As detailed history of the locks and the reason for their existence are expressed on other cache pages at other locks (see Lock Three or Lock 5 caches) this bio will concentrate on a few facts related to this particular lock.

Lock Four is located at Bookpurnong and was constructed in 1929. It sits 13m above sea level and some 516km from the Murray Mouth, this makes it 1,859km from the Dartmouth Dam and 1,709km from the Hume Dam in NSW.

Interestingly, the Murray's course falls 438m relative to sea level in the first half of its length from Dartmouth Dam, but a mere 47m from its halfway point (or there abouts) at Lock 15 (located at Euston) to its Mouth near Goolwa.

This cache is located on the opposite side of the river to a cache located near the lock to the south. You can't cross the lock to find this cache, you will have to find your way from the Berri side of the river to GZ. The cache is located a short distance inland from the river and lock to provide privacy for finding the cache and signing the log; you can drive to within a few metres of the cache. The short walk to the river bank reveals a fascinating sight of the downstream side of the lock mere metres away.

The cache is a small, black screwtop container containing log book, pencil, stash note and some small trade items. Access to this cache is via gravel and river flat tracks and as such is only suitable for dry weather. However access via boat etc on the river is year round.
