The Northern Wairoa River is brown primarily due to high levels of sediment, particularly during and after storm events. This sediment, which is soil and rock eroded from the surrounding land, suspends in the water and gives it a muddy appearance. Forest clearing and land use activities that disturb the soil have exacerbated erosion and sediment discharge into the river
The Northern Wairoa River, runs for approximately 150 kilometres. In the upper reaches, the river is formed from two separate rivers, the Mangakahia River and the Wairua River. The two streams meet to the northeast of Dargaville, becoming the Wairoa. It is the longest river in the Northland Region.
In the 19th century, the river's swamplands near Dargaville were the most popular location for kauri gum digging.
