We’d like to thank The Washers for conceiving the idea, initiating the series and inviting other cachers to add to it. Shropshire has its Church Gems, but so does Staffordshire and hopefully can become just as popular.
The Church, St Mary & All Saints, is a small ancient edifice, with a half-timbered turret, and was a chapel of ease to Stoke-upon-Trent until 1807. The benefice is a rectory in the patronage of Captain Rowland Mainwaring, and the Rev CH Mainwaring, BA, is the incumbent.
Whitmore is a neat rural village, in a deep romantic valley, four and a half miles SW of Newcastle-under-Lyme, comprising within its parish 367 inhabitants, and about 3350 acres of land.
Thomas Twyford (1849-1921) is buried in this churchyard.
He invented the single piece, ceramic toilet. He also made infamous Thomas Crapper's toilet.
At the time of his death he was recognised as a leading pioneer in the application of principles of hygiene to sanitary appliances. Thomas lived in Whitmore Hall and therefore it seemed fitting he is buried at St Mary’s and All Saints Church.
The above co ordinates are for Twyfords grave site, to obtain the co ordinates of the cache, you need to count the number of ornate wooden posts which connect the fencing that surrounds the Twyford monuments. This = A.
The final cache can then be found at
52° 57.(977-A)
2° 17.(080-A)
The cache is a nano, please take your own pen and be respectful of the surroundings.
A very short multi which should take about ten minutes.
There is no need to stray from the paths in the churchyard to find stage one. The final is just outside the church grounds.
Happy Caching
Mark & Annie
