New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment. The attraction
includes both natural and man-made objects of beauty. Wherever you
travel in New Mexico, you will find crosses. Famous New Mexico
artist, Georgia O’Keeffe, once said "I saw the crosses so often —
and often in unexpected places — like a thin dark veil of the
Catholic Church spread over the New Mexico landscape.”
Spanish adventurers first explored the desert southwest in the
early 1500's looking for "Cibola", the cities of gold. They always
traveled with Catholic priests who attempted to convert the people
they met on their travels. As a result, the cross as a religious
symbol has more than 400 years of history in this part of the
country. Almost every church is adorned with a cross. Crosses are
also used to commemorate places where a loved one was killed and
are common along roadsides. Crosses are sometimes placed as symbols
on high places. Las Cruces, a city in southern New Mexico, was
named for the crosses on top of the mountain east of town. This
cache is the third in a series based on New Mexico crosses and
churches.
The listed coordinates will take you to the parking lot of the
San Ignacio Church in the historic Martineztown neighborhood of
Albuquerque. It has a beautiful steeple topped with a cross. The
church dates back to 1916 and is a beautiful piece of architecture.
To get a better perspective move back 450 feet from the front
doorway and stand in the spot where the picture was taken. There,
you will also find the small, log only cache. Bring your own
writing instrument.
