Geocache Description:

Small snap-top box (no longer - helpfully replaced by another cacher - now a small plastic bottle) containing a log book.On the summit of Ullock Pike (2,230 feet) under a large stone. PLEASE REPLACE THE BOX CAREFULLY AND MAKE SURE IT'S OUT OF SIGHT. There's parking in the village of Bassenthwaite approx. 3.25 miles to the north of the cache site, or at the start of the ascent path. The Sun Inn in Bassenthwaite is a good watering hole.

This is a replacement for a previous cache that was 'disappeared'. A murrain on folk who do that . The cache is on the top of Ullock Pike (situated to the north of Keswick) – one of Alfred Wainwright's tops about which he waxes lyrical. He comments that "on a warm day some resolution is needed to get back on one's feet and move on." If you are feeling energetic this top can be bagged as one of a round including Carl Side, Skiddaw and Bakestall (taking in the cache at Dash Falls on the way ). The view from the top is worth the haul taking in the Galloway hills to the north and the mouth of the Solway and the Irish Sea to the west. If you're lucky, and have a good pair of binoculars, you might manage to spot the ospreys fishing in the shallow southern end of Bassenthwaite Lake. [Trick question – useful for pub quizzes – "How many lakes are there in the Lake District?" "One – Bassenthwaite. All the rest are Meres or Waters."]
