A cache on the Murrungowar Forest Drive worth a visit and a minor detour off the Princes Hwy. Not many are so well thought of that their colleagues go to this much effort.
Peter Geary was a respected forester at Orbost who researched and developed strategies for Sivicultural Thinning for hardwood production.
You will have seen the fruits of his work if you entered from Emfield Rd off the Princes Highway. He was obviously held in high esteem by his colleagues as it is not often that you see so much effort put into making sure that they are remembered.
Taken in tragic circumstances a monument to his work has been placed in a fantastic little spot which you would not otherwise know about.
The short walk in from the clearly marked car park is 400m and will only take a few minutes. The wild flowers in spring are superb, correa, grevillia, wattle & banksia abound. Crossing the ridge and descending into the creek the fauna changes again and treeferns & tall timber tower over the creek.
The site of the memorial is absolutely beautiful. I could sit there for hours.
The cache is a small sistema hidden in the immediate vicinity - BYO Pen. Please don't trample the vegetation looking for the cache as it isn't necessary.
Please enjoy this cache, and if you choose to do so enjoy the Murrungowar Forest Drive. Access to the cache from the Emfield Rd end is 2wd. The forest drive is 2wd in dry weather but 4wd is recommended for the middle section in wet weather. The PDF notes for the forest drive are on DSE's website at (visit link) Download them before you go if you are planning ahead.
