Este cache es un recipiente plástico cilíndrico, con premio para el FTF, logbook, lápiz, mina de bolígrafo, y varias sorpresas más. Este cache está localizado en El Fuerte Caprón de Guánica. Puedes llegar al sitio por la carretera # 333, la misma que lleva a mi otro cache: El Faro de Guánica - GC1FFFK.
¡Si te gusta la aventura, el reto y la exploración de sitios históricos, entonces este cache es para ti! Es un cache extremo, pues está localizado en el Bosque Seco de Guánica y a pesar de la vegetación en el área, el calor y el riesgo de deshidratación son muy altos. De manera que cuando vengas por esta búsqueda NO olvides traer mucha agua, protector solar y repelente para mosquitos pues abundan y son tan grandes como moscas. Calzado adecuado y sombrero también son recomendados.
El fuerte original fue construído de madera por los españoles mucho antes de la invasión norteamericana, era un lugar estratégico de vigilancia de la costa de posibles ataques de piratas y corsarios. El fuerte que observamos hoy en día se construyó en 1898 por el ejército de EE.UU después de la invasión de Guánica el 25 de julio de 1898. Su nombre conmemora el primer soldado norteamericano muerto en Cuba en la Guerra Hispanoamericana. Este fuerte es la figura central en la bandera de Guánica (ver foto). El fuerte está construido en piedra de coral y ladrillos y consta de una torre de observación, escaleras para subir a la torre y un muro en piedra con espacio para cañones. También se encuentra una mini plaza o un área despejada donde seguramente había una casa de madera, donde quedan apenas unos pedazos de cemento, también se pueden encontrar una base de cemento donde se izaba la bandera. Llegar hasta la cima del fuerte (~143 msnm, 470 pies snm) es el premio máximo de esta cacería, pues la vista es más que espectacular! Ven y disfruta del camino, del Fuerte Caprón, de la búsqueda y de la vista maravillosa y no te arrepentirás!
Como llegar hasta el Fuerte Caprón: Llega por la carretera # 333 hasta el lugar del estacionamiento e inicio del camino (N17 57.268 W66 54.267). La pendiente es bastante suave, lo que dificulta el ascenso es el calor y los mosquitos. Ya casi llegando vas a encontrar que ese camino se cruza con otro, debes seguir de frente. La continuación del camino parece el cauce seco de una pequeña quebrada, pero ese es el camino (N17 57.602 W66 54.205); si observas con cuidado te darás cuenta por donde ir avanzando. Este camino te llevará directamente a otro que rodea el Fuerte, te recomiendo tomar a la derecha y llegarás por la miniplaza que mencioné antes. El recorrido hasta el Fuerte Caprón es de 1050 m ó 0.65 millas, el tiempo aproximado es de unos 30 minutos, el descenso se hace en 19 minutos. Por seguridad no dejes objetos de valor visibles en el vehículo.
Otra manera de llegar al Fuerte Caprón es por el camino que sale del Centro de Visitantes del Bosque Seco. Esta ruta es más larga y no la exploré, pero se que se puede hacer en bicicleta. Si vienes a las instalaciones del Bosque Seco, puedes considerar esta opción si quieres hacer la ruta larga. El oficial de información te dirá cuál es el camino a seguir. El camino que yo propongo arriba es la ruta corta.

If you like the adventure, the challenge and the exploration of historical places, then this cache is for you! It’s an extreme cache, because is located at the Guánica Dry Forest Reserve and despite of the vegetation in the area, the heat and the dehydration risks are very high. So when you come by this search DON’T forget to bring enough water, solar protector and insect repellent because there are lots of mosquitoes that are big as flies. Appropriate footwear and hat are also recommended.
The original fort was built of wood by the Spaniards long before the North American invasion, was a strategic place to watch the coast of possible pirates attacks. The fort that we observed today was built in 1898 by the US armed forces after the Guánica invasion of July 25th, 1898. It was named in honor of the first North American soldier killed in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. This fort is the central figure of the Guánica’s flag (see picture). The fort was built in coral rubble and bricks and has an observation tower, stairways to get to the tower and a rock wall with space for canons. There is also a small plaza or open area where probably was a wooden house, the only remains are pieces of cement, you will see a cement base where the flag was hoisted. Getting to the top of the fort (~143 masl, 470 feet asl) is the maximum prize for this hunt, because the view is more than spectacular! Come and enjoy the trail, the Fort Caprón, the search and the amazing view and you will not regret it!
How to get to Caprón Fort: Arrive by road # 333 to the parking area and trail beginning (N17 57.268 W66 54.267). The hike has a smooth slope; the difficult part is mainly due to the extreme hot and mosquitoes. Close to the GZ the trail is going to cross another one; you must continue in front. The trail looks like a narrow dry creek, but in fact is the trail (N17 57.602 W66 54.205); if you watch very carefully you will notice the right way to continue. This trail will bring you to another that surrounds the Caprón Fort, I recommend taking to the right and you will arrive by the small plaza mentioned above. The total route to the Caprón Fort is 1050 m or 0.65 mile, the estimated time is about 30 minutes and the return trek is 19 minutes. For security reasons don’t leave valuable objects visible inside the vehicle.
Another way to arrive to Caprón Fort is by the trail that goes from the Dry Forest Visiting Center. This trail is longer and I didn’t explore it, but it is possible to be done in bicycle. If you come to the Guánica Dry Forest Reserve facilities can consider this option and ask for directions from the information officer. The trail I suggested above is for the short hike.
