Geocache Description:

Container is a plastic lock-n-lock box.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, regional railways proliferated, sometimes going bankrupt and emerging into another company almost overnight. Railways were bought and sold, merged and traded. One of these railway companies was the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company, known as the Frisco. Ellsworth was the end of this line of the Frisco, carrying passengers and freight to and from Hutchinson and Wichita, where the line linked with other lines. The train had to actually turn around here. There was a depot with a raised platform for boarding and loading. Numerous railroad workers and their families lived in the area, and the company even had a hospital nearby, which was closed probably when the “new” Ellsworth Hospital was built at the other end of town in 1921. There was a railroad bridge across the Smoky Hill, known as the Frisco Bridge. This is all gone now, but if you look carefully, you can see the edge of the depot’s foundation along what was the tracks but is now a dirt road. If you look to the northeast, you can see a faint path where more tracks used to be, possibly where the train had to go to turn around before heading back to Hutchinson.

You do not need to go near the present railroad tracks. Also please stay away from the LPG tanks on the neighboring property.
