35mm Film Canister, BYOP
The Oriskany is a pure white quartz sandstone found throughout West Virginia. This sandstone has been a significant part of industry in the state for over 150 years.
When encountered at depth, the Oriskany sandstone is a natural gas bearing formation. The high percentage of silica in the Oriskany also makes it an excellent source of glass sand, used in the many glass factories that have operated across not only this state, but all over the eastern U.S.
Information on a nearby Historical Marker:
Oriskany Sand
The massive sandstone forming the cliff is the Oriskany of the driller and the geologist. The Oriskany sand, an important gas sand, has produced in excess of a trillion cubic feet of gas in WV.
The cache is hidden in a gravel area on old route 55 between Baker and McCauley. The sandstone here is said to be about 400 million years old. If you look up the sides of the cliffs, you can see where the entrances to some old mine shafts were before they were filled in.
