Geocache Description:

History of the Castle

Abingdon't Fitzharris Castle dates from the medieval period between 1071 and 1084 in the aftermath of the Norman invasion of England. The motte is circular with approximately 70 feet diameter. A keep remained at the location for approximately 200 years. Fitzharris originated at the beginning of the twelfth century as a property of Abingdon Abbey, occupied by one of the thirty Norman knights providing military service to the King on behalf of the Abbey. It passed to the knight’s descendants until 1284, when the abbey recovered the manor from Hugh Fitz-Henry or Fitz-Harry. The manor later became known by variants of this name, including Fitzharrys and Fitzharris . The motte or mound structure, would have been used as a strong point for defense. The River Stert which runs nearby would have been used to create a watery barrier. The outline of which remains clear, but now time has caused the erosion of the mound and infilling of the now largely dry motte. Take time to explore the area which includes a nature area, little bridges and part of the original Fitzharris estate stone walls between Bath Street and the Vineyard. The only Fitzharris Manor Estate buildings now surviving (formerly the stables, coach-house and work-yard of the estate) can be seen nearby on the south side of Letcombe Avenue.

The Cache

The cache is not located on the heritage protected motte structure, but up a discrete nearby tree.

A short and not particularly high tree climb will be required, but can be tricky at the start, but was easy for my son when he was 13 years old.

  • Could you use a bit of wood to get you up the first bit?
  • Or start from someone's shoulders?
  • Perhaps if you are elderly you could cheat and use a ladder?
  • Put a rope over and pull?

Use your imagination.

This is supposed to be a physical challenge.

No excuses, it is only fair that if you don't sign, then you can't log as found, as you have not completed the challenge.

You are looking for a camera. You can try taking a photo if you wish. Local youths can meet at the location, so please ensure it is left out of sight from the ground. Please consider your safety and always work as a team.

Daniel Glover, previous cache owner has done an interesting introduction to the estate and castle including drone footage, see:
