Geocache Description:

Brown Crag (Helvellyn)

We retrieved a seed cache earlier in the day from One Degree of Separation (Helvellyn Gill) and after going up to Helvellyn via the treadmill of the Brown Cove Crag steps we returned by the nicer Brown Crag - a little frequented route. My non caching companions (well not yet!) wanted to see the seed cache placed so (though not within the rules of the Degree caches) we thought it was a nice place for a cache anyway.

Brown Crag is only a hummock on the slopes of the Helvellyn range but the track is steep. The main path (bridleway though no (?) horses or cyclists ever come this way) by passes the summit by a few yards but most walkers visit it as it is a great spot for a drink and view of Thirlmere. You will need the OS map to get here and (depending on which year your copy is) other paths are shown. Almost all but the main one are incorrectly placed however new your map! - indeed the paths on the official map of Open Access land on the internet is totally inaccurate.

Arriving at the rocky top a small path leads straight on towards Thirlmere. It goes no further than you can see so only experienced hill walkers should attempt to go down the hillside after it ceases. The cache is in the last rocks on the left of this path. It's a film cannister containing only a log book and NO PENCIL
