The Long Trail Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A small cache located near the beginning of the longest of the three hiking/biking trails at Summersville Lake, about 5 miles south of Summersville, West Virginia.
The cache is hidden very near the gravel parking area for the Battle Run trailhead. From U.S. Route 19, go west on State Route 129. If traveling north, this is a left-hand turn; if going south, turn right. After about 4 miles, you will see the sign for Battle Run Recreation Area on the right. Stay on Route 129. The highway will curve around to the right just past the entrance to Battle Run. As you come out of this curve, you will see the gravel parking area on the right with space for about six cars and a red gate just beyond. This is the beginning of Battle Run Trail. The cache is hidden close by. Please resist the temptation to bushwhack through the brush next to the mowed area to get to the hiding place. It is best to go in the woods via the short connector trail that goes down to the Battle Run access road.
While searching for this cache, if you are up for a day of hiking with some great high views of the lake and surrounding countryside from the top of two dikes, and the opportunity to encounter a variety of wildlife, why not go for the rest of the great caches located along this trail?
In addition to this lead-in cache, there is:
The Little Dike (GC3N6D9), .14 mile away.
Between a Rock and a Hard Place (GC11499), .50 mile.
Bandit's Treasure (GC1WKBQ), .90 mile.
The Big Dike (GC3MW59), 1.50 miles.
Off the Beaten Path (GC1N7ZG), 1.75 miles.
Half Way Around (GC12EG4), 2.25 miles.
Woodland Crossroads (GC1NW4W), 3.00 miles.
Battle Run (GC11BD5), 3.50 miles.
And, if the lake is at winter pool, you can continue on to The Big Island Cache, which is 4.25 miles away, by walking across the exposed lake bed.
The cache is in a small 13 oz. Lock & Lock container. Initial contents are: a lighted carabiner clip, an LED watch, 2 erasers, 2 glass "gems", magnet, lens cleaner, West Virginia pin, Canada flag pin, and a log sheet with pencil. There is also a special FTF pin for the First To Find.
