Geocache Description:

Another cache delving into the history of Girard, PA

This two part multi-cache will take you to the vicinity of four bridges, or their remains that have been used in West Girard. the first was called the "wooden bridge" which was washed away by high water in Elk Creek in 1894. The second bridge was started soon afterward and was called the "Iron Bridge". It survived until the early 1920's. Its southern abutment is still present. The third bridge was built in 1920 and is known as the "Concrete Bridge". It was removed in 2017. The fourth and current bridge was built in 1952 and carries route 20 over the creek and straightened the road. This bridge was built in conjunction with making route 20 into a four lane highway.

The first part of this cache uses the infamous second stage of the now archived "What's in the bag dad?" cache. Facedances has given me permission to use it and it's too good not to live again.

Park just beyond the Old Mill on old route 20. Follow the "fishermans' trail (across the road from the parking area) to the creek and go north towards the present bridge until close to the cache. if the creek is too high to allow this, bush-whacking through the woods will be needed which will up the difficulty considerably. This cache is NOT small children friendly due to the many wild rose thorn bushes in the area. I have trimmed several trails through them but if several weeks have passed since the last find I would recommend leather-palmed gloves and branch cutters be with you.
. Special thanks to Facedances for allowing the use of this stage, TPrints whose vast memory bank of coordinates allowed me to find it again and Caroline Veith from the West County Historical Society for the vintage pictures. NOTE: It is not practical to do this cache in below freezing weather.
