This geocache is one of a series of six located in the Peter’s Kill watershed. It can found along the yellow Mossy Glen Trail that parallels the Peter’s Kill, some 1.1 miles from the Lake Awosting Parking lot in Minnewaska State Park. This is a child-friendly hike that can be completed as a loop by continuing somewhat southwest of the cache along a blue trail that crosses a bridge and quickly connects with the Lower Awosting Carriageway.
The geocache access location is from a Minnewaska State Park entrance along Rt. 44/55, with parking at the Lake Awosting lot (N41°44.082’ W074°14.656’; UTM: 18T E562848 N4620596). The 2008 NY-NJ Trail Conference Map 104 (Shawangunk Trails - South) illustrates the access route well. The cache is located somewhat up a bedrock slope from the Peter’s Kill. The cache location was selected for its beautiful setting and excellent physical illustration of how the northwest sloping bedrock (approx. 10°) controls much of the flow direction of surface runoff that feeds the stream. Note the limited soil cover here that results in runoff quickly reaching the Peter’s Kill during periods of heavy rain. This makes the stream powerful and flashy as can be seen in log debris dams along the stream and during floods. Striations carved in nearby exposed bedrock by thick glacier ice during the last glaciation show that a glacier once flowed approximately S20°W here as it proceeded on its way to scour what are now Lake Awosting and Haseco Lake.
Initial cache contents include: log book, pencil, airplane, polished rocks, 10 periwinkle shells, Deputy Sheriff badge, toy carabineer, star charm, ring, toy compass, beads, mini-scissors, My Little Pony, frog, whale, squirrel, hippo, and a lizard.
The geocaches in the Peter’s Kill watershed series, proceeding from far downstream southwest toward the headwaters of the watershed, are: Peter’s Kill Rift, Gnome’s Home, Smiley Victoriana (near Lake Minnewaska), Mossy Glen, The Mouse Hole (near Lake Awosting), and Haseco Lake. Each location accents significant hydrologic and geologic features nearby. A GIS map is under construction that will place these caches within their larger watershed context.
This geocache was approved and permitted by Minnewaska State Park, Permit No. MSPP-08-06.
