This large cottonwood tree, planted in 1880, stands on the south side of the Trans Canada Hwy#1 and is said to be roughly half way between the Manitoba cities of Winnipeg& Brandon . There is another tree on the north side and few miles east of this tree that is said to be the true half way tree, but it doesn’t stand out as well as this one.
It's a very famous landmark for anyone travelling between the two cities and you can see it coming from miles away. Its presence challenges and defies the obscurity and flatness of the prairie landscape
This tree has seen both good times and bad times. It was nearly chopped down when the highway was widened, and local kids once tried to set it ablaze before firefighters stepped in. Sometimes known as the “Kissing Tree” it has seen picnics and marriage proposals and has also been witness to a great tragedy.
