Geocache Description:

Weird Al lives again

The original Weird Al cache was either buried under a metre of sand, or was washed out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean during the significant Central Queensland flood event at the beginning of 2008. Originally on the other side of the water, its believed there was over 3 metres of water over the cache site. And it was at the level of the top of the wall. Look around you, imagine about 4-5 metres of water coming over the wall. Would have been an impressive sight, if you could have got to it. Look around at how far up in trees flood debris lies, and the damage to trees and river bank on the downstream side. When this new cache was placed (end of August) water was still flowing strongly over the spillway, this water coming from the flooded Ensham mine just upstream. Thats the one that had the drowned dragline, Im sure you saw the pictures in the media. Note the new handrailing that you pass on the way to the cachesite. Note where the old one was ripped from the wall by the force of the water.

The cache itself is a piece of cake to find.

I have placed this cache as this area is a real surprise to the traveller, well it was for me when I first saw it, and most deserved of a cache. Camping is available on the southside, and its free I believe. Toilets are also here. The area is a well known recreation area for the locals, with waterskiing, swimming, fishing, and catching red claw all undertaken here.

The road north takes you up to the Tieri/Capella/Middlemount area, so may be a shortcut if you are heading that way. Note that this road becomes dirt, rough, and very probably impassable in the wet. Look for the grave of William Owen, which is located beside the road, immediately to the south of the river bank.

The cache has been relocated, to the southern side of the river. The even more significant flood event of early 2011 closed the road across the bottom of the weir for almost 5 months, making the cache inaccessible, without a huge detour of a couple of hundred kilometres. The new location should be very obvious. The location of the cache, including its height above ground level, would roughly be the height of the water in early 2011.

Unfortunately, yet again, I have had to relocate this cache, this time to hopefully a quieter more accessible location, which should be less troubled by muggles.

And no, I dont know what the name of the cache means, its just a carry over from the original cache.

FTF honours go to Avagomob.
