This cache has been placed in the shadow of the now (semi ? ) retired radio mast at the top of Norwood hill.
Over the years a lot of local urban mythology had grown up surrounding the mast and it’s use. The official line was that it was always a BT site and was used as a repeater station for Radio, TV and other communications of an electronic nature.
However it’s proximity to both RN Forrest Moor and USAF Menwith Hill radio listening stations lead to a firm belief in some quarters that the main purpose of this site was far from it’s claimed civilian role.
Indeed not only were there claims that it was an integral part of the much denied “ Echelon “ system but also even more far fetched claims of secret sub-terranean roadways linking this site to both Forest Moor and Menwith Hill repeatedly did the rounds although taking a look at geography suggests that these would have been immense feats of civil engineering had they been built.
Certainly the level of security has now been scaled back, where there once numerous CCTV cameras and other surveillance there are now merely signs reminding folks that the compound is private property and off limits. Curiously enough a new sign has recently appeared among those on the gate warning of “POISENOUS SNAKES” in the compound and while I have never heard of Adders in this area before it should be noted and caution taken when retrieving the cache as I don’t suppose any one has told them to stay in the compound ;) so if there are Adders in the area I would expect them to spread out a bit.
Stainburn Forest is now being converted to a forest aimed at recreation and there are numerous footpaths and trails through it, many of these trails have been built as a result of co-operation between the Forestry Commission and a mountain bike group called Singletraction, indeed the metalled path you follow to this cache site is part of one of the MTB routes designed in this forest. I have deliberately selected this location as it is one of the uphill sections of trail and as such the riders will not be moving fast but please give them consideration and keep dogs on a lead as it is due in large part to the hard work of Singletraction that this small forest is being opened up for recreational use by all people.
The cache itself is one on my Black almost waterproof boxes
When placed this cache contained ( among other things )
Numerous postcards to advertise the MEGA 2010 to be held in Scotland. It is requested that these are passed on and left in as many caches as possible to advertise the event
Many Thanks must go to Forestry Commission England, North Yorkshire Moors, for permission to place this cache.
If you would like to place a cache on North York Moors Forestry land please contact me through my profile and I will pass you the contact details and information you will need to place the cache ( it's easy )
