UPDATE (Oct 25): Following the devastating fire in April 2025, Silvermine was closed to the public for several months. Now open once more, the scale of the devastation can be seen. The bridge that stage 1 was hidden under was mostly destroyed and may, or may not be repaired. As a result stage 1 is in a new location. The final was unaffected by the flames.
The cache is hidden on the Silvermine River Walk. The walk is a favourite with 'Thunder' the Labrador as there is plenty of opportunity for getting wet! The walk follows the river from the main gate to the dam and is suitable in all weather conditions. The walk is through Fynbos and indigenous forest. The cache location was "found" while following the dog at a place we had often stopped, but not explored. Entrance to the reserve is: Adults R42, Children R21 (free entry for Wildcard holders).
These prices apply to SA residents only. The full price for non-residents is R184 (Dec 2024).
Entry times: 07:00-18:00, Summer(Oct-Apr); 08:00-17:00 Winter (May-Sept). The reserve is open for 1 hour after last entry. The cache can be done in under an hour, but it is suggested that you take your time! NB. Dogs are only allowed into the reserve with a SANP Activity Permit (level 1).
