As always we were on the hunt for a place to hide a cache. So Mal
(3BlindEyes) took us to a place where there used to be a cache near
a cave. Mal in his wisdom told us we could approach it from the
other side it would be a shorter distance to get to it. Sure Mal,
sure! Bush bash heaven, it may have been shorter but it sure wasn't
quicker. It would have had a terrain rating of 4.5 going this way,
so be warned if you decide to take that bush bash.
We finally come to the area and Mal walks over to where the cave
is. Mal slowly and carefully creeps up to the edge, testing the
ground as he goes (it is very overgrown - see photo). Well one
minute he is there and the next he is not!
Then Gav starts heading for the cave to make sure Mal is alright,
so I grab him back quick. ‘No Way, I wasn't losing two of
them’!
It was awful at the time – no sign of Mal and no sound from Mal.
The pictures that goes through ones mind. We call out to him and
there is this pathetic type groan back, ‘give me a minute’. After
some time (and a few more groans) Mal climbs back out after about a
4 meter fall. Yah, for Jude and her first aid kit!
After some repairs to Mal (PDA and camera scratched but still came
out better than Mal), he says oh I didn’t get the cave number and
wants to go back! I played the Mother act and totally forbid him!
I could just picture it, us coming back and having to post on the
forum that Mal was out caching with us and well, 'he is no more'.
Mind there was also the option where we could have just left him
there and no-one would have found him unless they fell in as well.
Tempting!
Next they ask me if I am still going to hide a cache there. My
answer, ‘Hell yes! It is totally safe as long as your name is not
Mal and you don’t go trying to get to the edge of the cave.
So knowing there is more than one Mal in the world I have posted
some photos. Some are spoilers but they will ensure you can stay
away from the cave, unless you like dicing with 4m drops!
When you walk up from the car parking location (listed below) the
tree (which the cache is hidden in) will be on your left, right
next to the path, and the cave is back a bit from that, to your
right, about 10 meters off the path.
A most exciting part of hiding this cache was
the Echidna we found crossing the road. He was such a cool little
dude. I was all concerned about him being on the road, so he
happily obliged got up and took off for the bushes. We had to catch
him up to get some photos, so he let us take a few and then off he
went again. There was no curling up to protect himself, he was
happy for us to take a photo of his cute little nose.
So this is a totally safe cache if your name’s not Mal and you
stay on the path and the wildlife is very obliging.
