Geocache Description:

This cache is at “The End of the Line” of the old Lehigh Valley Railroad spur that went from the central switching point on the main line at Hamden south to Pittstown. The trail is the old railroad bed and follows the east bank of Capoolong Creek its entire way. It is now called the Capoolong Creek Trail, and there is an informational plaque as you start on your way. There is another trail at the end of this one that goes to Clinton and is known as the Landsdown Trail. Both trails are flat and are bike and horse friendly. The Capoolong Creek trail has five other caches on it, so there’s plenty to do in this area. There are normally very few muggles at this end of the trail.

The cache is not in or under the old railroad depot, so there is no need to look there. The new container (old one was was washed away) is a 4" x 3" x 3" Lock ‘n Lock. Its new contents are a Travel Bug that wants to return to the Allentown area, a new deck of cards in its wrapper, a log and pencil, and a pencil sharpener. PLEAE DO NOT TAKE THE PENCIL SHARPENER! The North coordinate is pretty solid, but the West tends to drift between .553 and .557 due to the overhead canopy.

For a quick cache and dash, parking is at N 40 34.818, W 74 57.577. The cache is less than 200' from there. Go south on 513 out of Clinton into Pittstown, then continue 2/10 mile straight on 579 (513 goes right). Turn left into a gravel road immediately past a red house, go over a wooden bridge, and park on the left. For those seeking more exercise, the trail is accessible at numerous points east of 513, including Whitebridge Road, Kingtown Road, Sydney Road and the railroad grade crossing at the intersection of Landsdown and Sydney School Road, the site of the old switching station and a three-story train tower (now gone - all that’s left is an historic sign).

There is no need to catch poison ivy to find this cache, although there’s plenty of it around. Just be careful. Also, please replace the cache exactly as found. I’ve given this a “1" for difficulty but would appreciate comments about whether it should be upgraded a little.

Happy Caching!
