Geocache Description:

A long drive pays off with a spectacular hike up to the former site of the Squawman Lookout.

Looking north from the summit toward Lookout Mountain and the Lions Head

I never grow tired of the views up in the peaks of the Selkirk Crest, and the Wigwams offers yet another spectacular set of them. From this vantage one can look north toward Lookout Mountain and the Lions Head, south toward Mount Roothaan and Chimney Rock, east into the heart of the Selkirk Crest, and west toward Priest Lake and Upper Priest Lake.

To get to the trailhead, take Two Mouth Creek Road east from the East Shore Road. Stay left at the junction in 0.5 mile, continue 2.4 miles to another junction, then go left again. At this point the road quality begins to deteriorate as it begins the climb up the ridge; high-clearance vehicles are recommended. Proceed another 5.5 miles until the road crests the ridge and ends in a good-sized turn-around at the trailhead (elevation 5800 feet).

The trail begins with a gentle climb through the South Fork Lion Creek drainage and at about 1.2 miles comes to the edge of a massive granite cliff overlooking the Kent Creek Valley. From here the path continues another half-mile, switchbacking more steeply up the mountainside until reaching the crest and following it a short distance out to the old site of Squawman Lookout (elevation 7033 feet). All that is left of the lookout are two concrete foundations, but the panoramas that were the reason for putting the lookout here remain.

The cache is a .30-caliber drab olive ammo can hidden just a short distance from the old lookout site. Enjoy the hike and the views!
