Geocache Description:


The cache is located at Rathfran on the north side of the Palmerstown Estuary. From Killala take the road to Ballycastle. Directly after crossing the Palmerstown Bridge take the road straight in front of you (the main road turns left) . At the next crossroads turn right, and take the next right again. After parking follow the path along the side of the estuary as signed, there is a public entrance to the Abbey along here.

Rathfran Priory dates from the 13th century. It was founded for the Dominican order in 1274. It was added to in the 15th and 16th centuries. After the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII it was granted to Thomas Dexter. In 1590 the Priory was burned by the Governor of Connacht Sir Richard Bingham.

The cache is a small plastic box containing a log book, a hair bobble, a box of crayons and a wee yellow stretchy man.
