Le Theatre Royal de Namur

En 1824, une décision est prise d’ériger un théâtre à l’emplacement actuel. Un an plus tard c’est chose faite. L’édifice sera endommagé à trois reprises par les flammes en 1860, 1862 et 1867 et il sera systématiquement reconstruit. La façade actuelle date de (Question), et présente deux sculptures allégoriques représentant la Musique et la Comédie du sculpteur Van Arendonck. L'intérieur quant à lui est un exemple remarquable de théatre à l'italienne.
De 1994 à 1998, ce superbe édifice a fait l’objet de travaux importants de restauration et de rénovation dans le but de moderniser ses infrastructures et de conserver son patrimoine architectural du XIXème. La loge royale a alors disparu mais le théatre a gardé son nom de "Royal".

In 1824, a decision is taken to build a theater at the current location. A year later it's done. The building will be damaged three times by fire in 1860, 1862 and 1867 and will be systematically reconstructed. The current facade dates from (Question), and has two allegorical sculptures of sculptor Van Arendonck representing the Music and Comedy. The interior is a remarkable example of the Italian style theater.
From 1994 to 1998, this magnificent building has undergone major restoration and renovation in order to modernize its infrastructure and maintain the architectural heritage of XIXth century. The royal logia had then disappeared, but the theater kept its name of "Royal".

La Place d'Armes

La Place d'Armes, autrefois le Marché St-Rémy, date au moins du 10è siècle. Voire de plus longtemps encore, des fouilles ayant révélé les traces de l'ancien forum romain.
En 1914, l'artillerie allemande bombarda la ville. En 1944, ce fut les bombardiers américains, conduisant à la destruction des maisons entourant la place et lui donnant son aspect actuel.
A un coin de la place, vous y verrez deux personnages gardant des animaux sauvages et féroces, symbole des Namurois et de leur art de vivre !

The "Place d'Armes", formerly the "Marché St-Rémy", dates at least from the 10th century. Or more. Traces of the Roman forum were discovered at the time of the excavations for the underground car park.
In 1914, the German artillery bombarded the city. In 1944, the US bombers missed their target, leading to the destruction of the houses surrounding the place and giving its final shape.
At a corner of the place, you will see two characters keeping out wild animals, symbol of Namur and the art of living of their habitants !

Le Beffroi

Cette tour est un des 56 Beffrois de Belgique et de France classés " patrimoine mondial de l'humanité ", dont font aussi partie ceux de Bruges, Anvers, Gand, Ypres, Mons, Binche, Charleroi, Cambrai, Dunkerque.
A l'origine, l'ancienne Tour Saint-Jacques faisait partie de la troisième enceinte. Édifiée en 1388, cette tour entièrement circulaire avait 32 m de hauteur. Écourtée de 12 m au 16è siècle, elle fut alors surmontée d'un campanile renaissance et pourvu d'une cloche. On l'appela dès lors "cloche-porte" parce qu'elle annonçait l'ouverture et la fermeture des portes de la ville.

This tower is one of the 56 Belfries of Belgium and France classified as " world heritage of the humanity ", like the ones of Bruges, Antwerp, Ghent, Ypres, Mons, Binche, Charleroi, Cambrai, Dunkerke.
At the origin, the old "Tour Saint-Jacques" belonged to the third enclosure. Built in 1388, this entirely circular tower was 32 m height. Curtailed of 12 m at the 16th century, it was then surmounted with a bell-tower. Habitants called her the "bell door" because she announced the opening and the closing of the doors of the city.
