They came to Measure the Kame and here you will do just that. This is meant to be fun and light spirited and to basically educate you about what that bump is on the horizon. Some fairly steep climbing will be required to completed the requirements.
They Kame to Measure the Kame
A Kame is a low, steep, conical mound of layered sand and gravel dirt. It is thought to be developed from glacial deposits from streams of melting glacial ice. The streams carry sediment to glacial lakes, thus building Kame deltas on top of the ice. The sand, gravel and till accumulates over time in a depression of a retreating glacier. Then with further melting of the glacier, the sediment, or kame delta, eventually collapses on the lands surface.
This particular Kame is located in the The Sauer Family Prairie Kame Preserve, named after the Sauer family, longtime residents of Sugar Grove. It was thought to be deposited here as long as 12,000-14,000 years ago as the glaciers moved through this land. It is an isolated landmark overlooking the plains to the southwest for miles on a clear day. It is covered with natural prairie and home to many regional birds, making this one of the best remaining examples of this glacial form.
These rounded hills can range in height from a few feet to 100 feet or more. To get credit for this Earthcache you will need to send me via e-mail your elevation in feet at the sign and then the elevation in feet at the top of this Kame. Then using your figures, can you tell me in feet how tall this Kame is?
Once at the top, don't forget to take a picture and post it with your log, it too is a requirement. It can be of yourself with the Kame or your favorite view of the Kame.
Information for this earth lesson was gathered from Wikipedia.com, encyclopedia.com and the Kane county Forest Preserve web site.
Thank you for visiting!!
I too will soon be displaying my favorite picture for you to enjoy also.
