Geocache Description:

This is a replacement for our first hide (GC16HH0)
in a quiet little park in Sykesville.

Are you crazy about geocaching? Do people think you are a nut when you tell them you go bounding off into the woods in search of hidden treasures? Do you covertly pick hitchhikers off of your pants at early morning meetings because you go out geocaching before work? Is your PAF on speed dial? Is your caching gear worth more than your home entertainment center? Is “swag” a regular item on your shopping list? Do your legs look like they have Chinese calligraphy on them from trotting through the briars?

This cache is across the road from Springfield State Hospital. For those of you that enjoy some history with your caches:
In 1894, the Legislature of the State of Maryland addressed the issue of overcrowding of the one state operated psychiatric hospital by creating a search committee charged with finding a site for the erection of the “Second Hospital for the Insane of Maryland”. After reviewing a number of potential sites, the committee selected Springfield, the estate of the Patterson-Brown family. At the time of this selection, Springfield was owned by Governor Frank Brown, a descendant of the William Patterson family, a wealthy colonial era farmer and merchant. William Patterson’s daughter, Elizabeth, or “Betsy,” gained international fame and notoriety when she married Jerome Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. By the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the hospital population exceeded 3000.
Do not park on Route 32 to find the cache. There is plenty of parking nearby.
You will need a pencil for the log. When you log your find in the computer, please share with us why you think you are (or are not) crazy about geocaching.
