Geocache Description:

This is the 2nd in a series of 4 caches based in the Winster Valley on farmyard tracks, pathways and woodland walks.

This is the second in a series of 4 caches in the Winster Valley starting at Roper Ford on the River Winster. A gentle walk of about 7km over varying surfaces ranging from open meadow, farm tracks, short sections of roadway, more meadows, woodland and even more meadows. This is a circular route that can be tackled by walkers of all ages and ability. Short cuts allow you to do this series in sections if so required and most of the caches can be done individually from selected parking spots.

Look out for the varied and interesting wildlife in the area. Buzzards are plentiful, pheasants are noisy and the deer are VERY elusive and shy but we saw at least 5 whilst putting on these caches.

The Winster valley is renowned for its local produce of Damsons and if tackled in the Springtime the trees will be white with blossom. In Autumn, the blossom will have grown into fruit and there’s nothing finer than a good dollop of Damson Jam on a fresh scone. And, of course, these Damsons may be added to Gin to make the local tipple Damson Gin (obtainable from Booth’s Supermarkets).

After WW1. Fantasy Island continue on Bridleway to Winster House. Cross a tarmac drive before continuing NNE on an unsurfaced track to leave Birkett Houses to the East.Pass through 3 gates/stiles before joining a fram track towards a Bungalow built on an elevated plot with a great view down the valley to the South. The footpath crosses the meadow infront of a small rocky outcrop on which a lone tree 'grows'. Cross through a gate below a small wood and circumvent this wood before joining the roadway. The cache is just ahead of you.

A small plastic container held (at time of placement) a Travel Bug. Pen, log book, felt tip pen and paper grip.
