Geocache Description:

Unfortunately we are no longer able to maintain these caches. If you would like to adapt them and keep them running please let me know. A stroll of less than 1 mile along Monarch Way in Wick village. There are stiles to negotiate, so not stroller friendly. The route can be wet and muddy – watch out for cow pats too! The posted co-ordinates are to the Golden Valley car park adjacent to Wick Village hall.

Wick village is very old. The Manor of Wyke, belonged to the Abbey of Glastonbury before the reign of Richard I. In 1192 the manor became the property of the Bishopric of Bath and Wells, thus it continued until Henry VIII acquired it in 1546. He granted it to John Wintour. Monarch Way is the 610 mile route used by Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651 when he was pursued by the Parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell. Charles first travelled north, where he hid in the famous oak tree at Boscobel. He then travelled south through the Cotswolds and the Mendips to the South Coast at Charmouth, and finally along the South Downs to Shoreham from where he made his escape to France.
