Buscas un container de plasticina camuflado con duct tape, para un “park & grab”, localizado en las afueras del hogar de muchas especies animales locales y exóticas: El Zoológico de Mayagüez. Este cache tiene la intención de destacar este lugar como atractivo turístico del oeste de PR y su importancia para hacer investigaciones científicas y para difundir el conocimiento sobre la fauna y la conservación de especies amenazadas y en peligro de extinción. No olvides traer un bolígrafo o lápiz para firmar la hoja de visitas.
Los inicios del zoológico se pueden remontar a la época de los egipcios y la China antigua. Los emperadores Aztecas poseían grandes jardines, en los cuales introducían animales de todas partes del imperio. El primero de los zoológicos modernos, data de 1752. Este era la Casa Imperial de Fieras, en Viena, Austria. El parque zoológico de Regent's Park, en Londres, fue creado en 1828 por la Sociedad Zoológica de Londres. El zoológico de Mayagüez es el único zoológico de PR y recibe el nombre del ilustre profesor del Colegio de Mayagüez Dr. Juan A. Rivero. Quien es un catedrático activo del Departamento de Biología del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM). El zoológico abrió en 1954 y para esa época funcionaba en Isla Magueyes en La Parguera (Lajas), donde actualmente están los laboratorios del Depto. de Ciencias Marinas – RUM.
El zoológico abre de Miércoles a Domingo desde las 8:30 am hasta las 4:00 pm. El costo de las taquillas es $6 para adultos, $4 para jóvenes entre los 17 – 10 años y $2 para niños entre 10 - 5 años. Niños menores de 4 años entran gratis. El costo del estacionamiento es de $3 para automóviles y $4 para minivans. El zoológico tiene varias nuevas exhibiciones como el mariposario, el artropodario, el aviario y tiene a disposición charlas y programas conservación. How to get there: Take Route 2 to Mayagüez. Then take the Route 2 Spur right by the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayaguez Campus (RUM). You’ll see signs for that. That will lead you to Route 65, which you’ll be on briefly. Then turn left onto Route 108 and follow it past the University. Then look for the sign telling you to turn right for the Zoo. Make the turn, and follow this road maybe a mile or 2 until you see the zoo on your right. After you go in and pay for parking, continue through the parking area, past the buildings (these are administrative offices, not the entrance). The main entrance is to the far right.
