This cache is located in Beachwood, Ohio.
The cache was inspired by all the squirrels I see gathering nuts for the winter. I was on a lunch break and saw three black squirrels going up and down the trees in the cache area with nuts and placing them in their nests. There are also deer the frequent the area so if you have your camera there may be a photo opportunity to be had.
Black squirrels (S. carolinensis)live in the South-eastern United States and a small area of the North stretching from Pennsylvania to Michigan. They also dominate the Canadian province of Quebec and the city of Vancouver in Bristish Columbia.
There are many theroies on how the black squirrel came to America but some think they came from Europe, presented as a gift, then released into the wild on an island. From there, they escaped the confines of the island by jumping across ice floes on the Mississippi River when it was frozen. Biologists estimate that nationwide about one of every 10,000 gray squirrels is the black mutant. Another intersting fact is that the black fur more readily absorbs heat from the sun’s rays providing warmth during cold northern winters; equally important, the black coloration is a defense mechanism.
Hopefully you learned something new about the black squirrel & when your seeking the cache you may even see one. If you take a picture of one post it in your log. It's not a logging requirement for the cache so if your don't have your camera that's ok.
