This busy thoroughfare is one of the main arterial roads into Leicester. The Stoneygate area is famous for its large Victorian houses and leafy, green streets. The Red Cross currently occupy Thorncroft, the home of the famous Thomas Cook, (1808 – 1892) who had this house built for himself and his family. One night in 1881 his daughter, Annie Elizabeth Cook, tragically died from asphyxiation whilst bathing. A ‘modern’ gas boiler had been fitted into the bathroom. The flames were accidently extinguished resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning. Thomas Cook, aged 83 died at Thorncroft in July 1892 and he is buried in Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester.
Not far from the Cooks home was Stoneygate School built in 1851 a preparatory school founded over 70 years earlier by G. B. Franklin. This may have been the educational establishment of James Mason Cook, Thomas Cook’s son. In 2002 William Davies Homes Limited purchased the property and have since converted the house into flats and built additional homes on the site. Although not accessible to the public the gardens contain many interesting trees and shrubs including a deciduous Swamp Cyprus, a native of the Florida everglades.
The cache is an easy find, to the trained eye, micro. Beware muggles are ever present so proceed with caution.
