Teorierna kring detta vördnadsbjudande byggnadsverk är många. Det
har spekulerats i om det varit en plats för astronomiska
observationer, en begravningsplats eller en försvarsanläggning. Det
faktum att byggnadens orientering vetter exakt mot
midvinstersolståndets soluppgång har lett till hypotesen att det är
en jättelik kalender. Någon har till och med föreslagit att det är
en landningsbana för rymdskepp, byggt av utomjordingar!
Den idag förhärskande uppfattningen bland historiker och arkeologer
är dock att det är ett tempel, uppfört och brukat av en solkult
under neolitisk tid. Kanske offrade de till solguden vid årets
mörkaste tidpunkt för att få honom att återvända från sitt
vinterviste.
Teorierna har emellertid förblivit teorier - det gåtfulla folk som
konstruerade anläggningen har försvunnit in i historiens
dimmor.
Längs byggnadens nordöstra sida kunde man fordom hitta
hällmålningar, gjorda med ett antal olika pigment. Vad de
föreställde kan vi bara gissa, men med största sannolikhet hade de
ett religiöst eller ceremoniellt syfte, där rödockran vanligen
symboliserar blod. Eventuellt syftar de till att befrämja jaktlycka
eller fruktbarhet.
Numer har hällmålningarna vittrat bort, på grund av
luftföroreningar och neurotiska klottersanerare, men en expedition
från 1901, ledd av Sven Hedin, dokumenterade delar av dem på
fotografiska plåtar, till nutida forskares stora glädje. Några av

Idag ligger templet öde och övergivet, men reser sig fortfarande
majestätiskt över träden som ett tyst vittnesbörd om ett utdött
folks arkitektoniska genialitet.
Det ryktas att platsen ruvar på dolda skatter och andra
hemligheter.

There are many theories about this imposing structure. Is it a
place for astronomical observations, a burial ground or a fortress?
The fact that the structure is exactly aligned with the winter
solstice sunrise has led to the suggestion that this is a giant
calendar. Some people even claim that this is a landing ground for
spaceships, constructed by aliens!
The most common opinion today among historians and archaeologists
is however that it is a temple, raised and used by a solar cult
during the neolithic period. Perhaps they made sacrifices to the
Sun at it's lowest position of the year to make him return from his
winter dwelling.
However, these theories have remained theories - the mystic people
who constructed it has vanished into the mists of history.
Along the north-east side of the structure, parietal rock art,
made with various pigments, could be found earlier. Alas, they have
withered away during the last century, due to acid rain and uptight
graffiti erasers, but luckily an expedition in 1901, led by Swedish
explorer Sven Hedin, documented some of the paintings on
photographic plates.
What the paintings depict is uncertain, but their purpose was most
certainly religious or ceremonial, with the red hematite paint
symbolising blood. Maybe they should grant good hunting or

Today the temple lies abandoned and deserted, but still looms
majestically over the trees as a silent witness to an extinct
people's architectural excellence.
Rumour has it that it sits on hidden treasures and other
secrets.
