Geocache Description:

This is a small cache - no room for swaps - just the logbook and sometimes a pencil. But if this is broken......

Since its inception in 1925 as in integral part of the UK air defence system, the primary role of the Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was the recognition and identification of hostile aircraft. With the start of the cold war and the increasing threat of nuclear attack in the 1950's, the ROC was given the added responsibility of reporting nuclear bursts and monitoring fall-out which necessitated the construction of 1563 underground monitoring posts throughout Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

All that was visible of these Observation posts was the louvred air vent and the concrete access shaft along with some monitoring equipment and radio antennae.

Two or three persons could live underground and plot information with the surface level sensors that would enable regional centres to triangulate nuclear burst areas and fallout direction.

This ROC post was classed as a Master Post. You can identify a Master Post by the bulbous metal cap on the side of the air vent.
One of these posts was sold in March 2010 in Derbyshire and fetched £20600 on eBay!!
More information on ROC bunkers can be found at this site. Here you can see more pictures of this ROC post, both above and below ground.

If you have visited any of the Argyll ROC caches, you won't need the hint or spoiler...
