Geocache Description:

A nice round 5km round trip hike, follow the town trail, or try hiking along the shoreline from the lighthouse!

I heard from one of the locals that there was a trail maintained by the town that would take me to the "Tar Pits". JOY!! Expecting to see a black lake filled with mastadons and cavemen I rushed to view such a spectacular site! Upon arrival I found the water to be clear and unusually blue, the stones to be crimson red, pink, and even a big jade boulder, and the tar stored in melting barrels. Actually quite a neat spot!

The Tar was stored in this inlet during the 1960s, cooked up in metal vats, and served to passing fishermen hoping to better water proof their nets. One of the Vats is still just sittin there full of Tar. Feel free to try waterproofing those new hiking boots in the stuff!

The Towns "Tar Var" Trail begins at the parking lot for the lighthouse. You can follow the yellow markers through the forest, or attempt to go along the shoreline from the lighthouse. Both are amazing routes.

Please note the Trail is not the most "maintained" trail. You will likely see deer trails that seem clearer then the one you are following. If you get lost, head for the lake and follow the water along the shoreline!

BRING YOUR OWN PEN! DO NOT WRITE YOUR LOG IN TAR! IT WILL DESTROY THE LOG!
