Located near the top of a ridgeline, in a rocky area that will lead you past old mining areas along the trail. The hike is mostly on well defined trails, but will take a turn toward the cross country near the end. It will be your job to determine what route to take at this point, as the direction the GPS tells you will NOT be the easiest way to proceed. Parking is not a problem, being just off Hwy 16 at a location designed for folks to hike this area (N-43deg 53.976 / W-103deg 25.747)
This cache is in a neat area to hike that is often overlooked by those on the highway and yes, that is Mt. Rushmore you can see in the distance!
This is the third cache we have placed and we seem to get better each time. This time with the help of 3 more cachers we have teamed up with :o). The cache is a narrow ammo box, placed in the area of a long past mining operation in the beautiful Black Hills, just outside the town of Keystone. We hike this area often, but just recently discovered this cache location ourselves.
The mining in this area appears to be mostly surface mining. While we have not encountered sunken shafts in the areas we have explored here, the possibility they exist is present in ALL areas of the Black Hills. Just keep your eyes open to the terrain in front of you if you decide to go wandering through the wooded areas off the trails.
Now to the cache... There are many spots it could be when you reach the area of the coordinates, so to help you with locating it, and because of the addition of 2 new younger cachers (and one English teacher) to our team, further information about how to find it are in the following rhyme / parody, with our apologies to Dr. Seuss....
