I have always been a fan of fairy tales and folklore. However, I'd never really researched any Native American folklore. I knew that different animals had different meanings to different tribes. That was about as far as my knowledge extended. Therefore, finding this cache site intrigued me and encouraged me to do some research.
Many of my friends and co-workers are Native American. Being in Ada, heart of the Chickasaw Indians, I guess that would be understandable. Through talking to them and of course the ever handy Google I have learned a lot regarding the folklore of the deer.
I found a story called "The Foster-Child of the Deer." I loved the story and have posted a link to it for you to read. I also loved the information I found in searching for the story. The deer is the care-taker. Native Americans do not believe in wasting resources. The deer is not only the main source for traditional native clothing now, but also for traditional, ceremonial, and hunting tools. I also learned that to have a deer cross your path is a blessing of abundance in the coming year.
To me, this is what geocaching is all about. It's the experience of getting to the cache. Not the actual cache. Enjoy what you have learned with this one and please do not disturb the remains so that others can appreciate the experience as well.
