Cache located at the famous Harvard mine quarry on the side of
Noyes mountain's pegmatite.
Originally mined by George Noyes and Tim Heath, about 1894. Worked
briefly by Loren Merrill and Arthur Valley in 1921-1922. Harvard
University acquired the mineral rights in 1917 and worked was done
by Loren b. Merrill whom purchased the mineral rights in 1926. The
rights passed to several hands eventually ending with Frank Perham
whom has mined it since 1960. Many fine minerals and gemstones have
been discovered here. The dumps cascade down the hill side. Caution
should be used as they are very steep. Original cache includes some
gemstones I collected at the quarry today.(see photo)The view alone
makes it worth the hike which takes about 20-30 min. and gets a
little steep in some spots. Remember to place cache carefully as a
lot of cracks and holes for it to slip into here. To get to the
cache follow the red markers up the wood road across the road from
the parking spot which is located on the right about 1/2 mile on
Richardson Hollow Road. Update to this - since Noyes mountain preserve now manages the land you must hike up their trails further up the road to reach the cache. Remember to share your pictures - yes bring
a camera you'll want it. Good luck in your rockhounding.
FTF - I had a feeling jimsjems would cache this
one first thanks for the log info and additions to the cache
