Geocache Description:

Journey back to the Civil war; the year is 1864. General Lee, hoping to delude Grant's forces in Petersburg, VA, sends Lt. Gen Jubal Early to go up the Shenandoah Valley to attack DC.

This was the only time during the Civil war that a Southern army was able to enter Washington. They marched down 7th Avenue (which is now Georgia Ave) on July 11 at noon. Tired and unsure of the Union's Strength, Early decided to wait a day until attacking Ft Stevens.

During this time President Lincoln brought his wife to observe the battle from the Fort. There they were briefly under fire from the South and a Confederate bullet wounded a surgeon standing next to him. Lincoln was ordered to take cover by one of his men. This is the only time an American president has sat under fire during his time in office.

The fighting continued into July 12 when Early decided that the Fort would not be taken and withdrew his forces. The next day he and his men crossed the Potomac River.

The cache is hidden in Woodside Park, which lies along the path that the Confederate army took to DC. Because this is a park, there will be a lot of muggles around. Use stealth. Make sure to put the lid on the cache, and return it the way you found it. Bring your own pen.
