A cache with great views of Falmouth Bay, if you head down to the beach take into account the tide, and the rocks can be slipery. The cache is suitable for accompanied children, but not wheelchair accessible, enjoy.
Decided to put this cache out as it is Tall Ships weekend in Falmouth (Sept 08). The cache is placed where you can see wonderful views of Falmouth Bay. It is suitable for small swops, and already has one or two items for exchange.
As I have been diving in Cornwall for 30 odd years and have accumulated various ship wreck treasures, I have decided to put a treasure item from a Cornish wreck in some of the caches I do. Therefore the 'first to find' for this cache will find a bronze Manilla from the ship The Douro, an Isles of Scilly wreck. This ship sunk in 1843 with the loss of all hands on the Western Rocks.
The Manilla has an interesting history, the trade in Slaves had been going on for many years and brought great wealth, especially to England. The local Chiefs traded their human cargo for many different commodities and bronze Manilla was one of them. They were manufactured in Birmingham between 1830 and 1850, shipped out to Benin on the Slave Coast of Africa and bartered for one slave each Manilla. These unfortunates were then packed into the holds of ships and taken to the West Indies, usually making vast profits,if the slaves did not die on the journey.Good hunting.
