Geocache Description:

This cache is a regular sized camo lock-n-lock container. Please bring along your own pencil.

A camera is enclosed in this cache to document your visit to North Bass. Please leave in the cache. Pictures will be posted at a later date.

It is located on North Bass Island, an island located in Lake Erie. It is also known as Isle Saint George. The 688 acre island is one of few islands has not been commercially developed. The state of Ohio purchased 589 acres of the island to preserve it from development. Historically, North Bass was mainly used as a vineyard. According to the 2000 census the island had 13 permanent residents.

This cache will require special transportation arrangements. There is no public marina. The marina is for residents only. Use your imagination to get here! Jet skis, kayaks, airplanes would all be excellent choices. If you are traveling by water, there are several locations where you can “beach” your craft of choice to reach the cache. Once on the island, you will need to walk to this cache or use your own bike.

This cache is placed to preserve the memory of one of the historical stories of this island. It is the tale of Walter and Rose. Walter’s family was involved in the vineyard and wine business. Rose’s family came to the island to work in the vineyards. The two young people met and fell in love. Since not too many marriages take place on this unique island, this event became the social highlight of the year. Everyone was invited. All men were invited to bring along their rifles to give the young couple a salute, a tradition of that period.

This day of celebration quickly turned to tragedy. As the young couple mingled amongst their guests, one of the rifles was knocked over, discharging a bullet, which struck Walter in the side of the head. He died a few days afterwards. Rose’s family left the island soon after to escape this dreadful memory.

As you stroll through the cemetery and church of North Bass, take a moment to remember this young couple and the true meaning of “’til death do us part.”

Feel free to enter this lovely church and to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
