Farewell to North Bass School Traditional Cache

Keystone: This geocache came to my attention as being in need of an owner maintenance visit. The cache owner needs to check on this cache ASAP and either fix the problem or archive the listing, after picking up any geo-litter. See the maintenance section of the Geocache Hiding Guidelines. In the meantime, I've temporarily disabled this cache page.

Owner, if there is a good reason for a long delay in enabling this cache, do not contact me through email or the message center. Please post an update note log here on the cache page so that everyone will know what's going on. When the maintenance is completed, you can re-enable the listing by entering an "enable listing" log. Use an "Owner Maintenance" log to clear the "Needs Maintenance" attribute, if set.

I will check back in four weeks or so to be sure that the maintenance has been done, or that an explanation has been provided. If the problem persists, I will need to archive this cache page for lack of maintenance.

Geocache Description:

This cache is a regular size camo lock-n-lock container. Please bring along your own pencil.

As of 7/4/12, the cache is now a green regular size container.

It is located on North Bass Island, an island located in Lake Erie. It is also known as Isle Saint George. The 688 acre island is one of few islands has not been commercially developed. The state of Ohio purchased 589 acres of the island to preserve it from development. Historically, North Bass was mainly used as a vineyard. According to the 2000 census the island had 13 permanent residents.

This cache will require special transportation arrangements. There is no public marina. The marina is for residents only. Use your imagination to get here! Jet skis, kayaks, airplanes would all be excellent choices. If you are traveling by water, there are several locations where you can “beach” your craft of choice to reach the cache.

This cache is placed on the grounds of the North Bass Island School, a public Ohio school for grades kindergarten through eighth grades. This school ceased operation in 2005 when the only two children living on North Bass “graduated” from seventh and eighth grades and began attending the high school on South Bass Island.

Just as you required special transportation to get to this quaint isle, these children also use special transportation to go to school. Each day they board a plane, hop on a jet ski or use a private boat to attend classes and school related activities on the island of South Bass.

Relax and enjoy North Bass Island and its slow pace of life.
