The area of March was once an island in the marshes of The Fens. It is believed that Roman invaders once occupied the area, as a Roman causeway and several settlements are evident. The draining of the marshes took place during the 17th Century, reclaiming land to help March and the rest of the Fens grow. The town of March was formed from two hamlets - Merche and Mercheford - with a canal separating the two. With the River Nene flowing through March, shipping was a popular trade in the area. However, the shipping trade declined with the introduction of the railway system to the area. March also has their own saint - Saint Wendreda. St. Wendreda Church is known world-wide, as it features 120 carved angels and a magnificent double-hammer beam roof. The cache is not inside the church yard, but close by.
