Geocache Description:

This historic structure was originally built in 1843 on Church Road near Deering Road.  In 1888 it was disassembled and moved to the corner of Dixie Highway and Bethany Lane on land donated by the Moremen family.  The chapel was reassembled brick by brick and reopened in 1889 as the new home for Bethany United Methodist Church where it stood for 118 years.  The congregation moved to a new site on Moorman Road in 2005 leaving behind the old chapel.  It was later decided to donate the church to Riverside The Farnsley-Mooremen Landing so that it could be preserved.

Chapel far right on Dixie Highway

On March 19, 2006 local residents witnessed an unusual sight.  The 30 foot wide by 60 foot long by 34 foot tall, 240 ton chapel was moved in one piece down the middle of Greenbelt Highway to its new home in Riverside.

Moving Day

The chapel at its new Riverside location

At first sight you may wonder why this attractive little chapel was moved to such a remote site, but this area is part of the Riverside site development plan created in 2006.  You can view the proposed plan for the surrounding  300+ acres at the Farnsley-Moremen Web Site

On May 8th, 2013 the 170 year old chapel was dedicated as the Moremen Family Chapel.  The $928,000 chapel restoration project has finally been completed.  It includes a new courtyard and support building along with a new road, parking lot and landscaping.  After sitting empty for 8 years the historic little Chapel is now available for weddings, receptions, and other private functions.

The Chapel from across the old plant covered pond

The chapel is located just off Old Bethany Lane which is directly across the Greenbelt Highway from Bethany Lane.  You can access the chapel either from Farnsley Moreman Landing by taking the Ohio River Levee Trail or by parking off Greenbelt Highway along the Old Bethany Lane - N38 06.258 W85 53.628.  If you park here please do not block the locked road gate or you will be subject to being towed.  Pedestrians can easily walk around the road gate and you will see the chapel once you cross the Levee Trail.  Soon you will be able to access the cache from the new park road which is currently under construction.

You are looking for a large Bison Tub hidden near the chapel.  You can easily access the cache from the chapel parking lot.  The cache is near little used spur railroad tracks.  You do not have to get on the tracks to search for the cache.  If your are on the loop trail cross the railroad tracks at the crossing and access the cache from the blacktop road near the chapel.
