Nicosia series X, Venetian Porta Juliana

Do you want to walk back in history on narrow streets, old houses and buildings? Then this is the cache for you and not only. Follow the Nicosia caches and be part of the history.

The history here is Porta Juliana the Venetian Gate to Famagusta, Chrysaliniotissa and Saint kasianos.

The Famagusta Gate, part of the fortified medieval town wall of Nicosia, is a historic relic, one of the three fortified gates, the others been Kyrenia, and Pafos. Originally this gate was called by the Venetians "Porta Juliana" in honour of the military engineer who designed the wall, Count Savorgnano. In those days, the Gate was also known as "Porta di Sotto" (Lower Gate), because of the difference in level from the outside. The Turks in their turn called it "Taht-el-kaleh". Restored to its former glory, the Gate with its two halls and the passageway, has become Nicosia's Cultural Center. Ever since, Famagusta Gate has welcomed all cultural activities whether expressions of Cypriot culture and tradition, or foreign. In practice the Gate has the ability to function either as a whole or as three "separate" centers. While the South hall may have an art exhibition, the passage may house a theatrical performance, and the North hall may hold a lecture.

The church of Panagia Chrysaliniotissa is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and its name means 'Our Lady of the Golden Flax' in Greek. It is considered to be the oldest Byzantine church in Lefkosia and was built in 1450 by Queen Helena Paleologos. It is renowned for its rich collection of old and rare icons.

On your way to stage 2, to Saint Kasianos, you can see the “Archontiko of Axiothea” (mansion) which is one of the most characteristic examples of urban architecture of the 18th century.
