This requires a long drive down a dirt road and then about a mile hike from the trail head. This is located on the Verde River and the long drive is worth it.
Al Capone did hideout at the resort that was built here in 1931 and remained here until 1962 when it burned down. What is left of the Verde Hot Spring is just across the river from this Geocache by the palm trees. This area is full of history. The building at the trail head was built in 1908 and was a hydro-electric power plant until just recently. The plant was built to provide power for Jerome's mines in the old days. Fossil creek has been returned to its natural course. This has changed the way this place looks compared to how it was the last 90 years, it was very lush looking like a tropical inland. Now the big cottonwoods are dying and the berry plans are gone. This is still a great place to camp, but it is not kid friendly. I only go in the middle of the week as I hear it can get crazy on the week ends. The cache is a very large ammo can up river from the camp ground about 1 mile.
How to get to the hot spring from the Geocache
The river backs up into a pond shape down river just a little ways from the Geocache. Just before the pond ends and the water turns back into a river there is a shallow spot in the pond about knee high to waist high depending on the river flow. Cross there and follow the trail down river, you will come to what is left of the resort. You will see the trail on the south side of the river. Look for the palm trees if you get lost. Its very close to the cache basically just across the river. Its very nice at night to watch the stars and talk to all sorts of people. During the week there is hardly anyone there, even the weekend can be quiet during the summer.
