Geocache Description:

A short walk over easy terrain from either roadside parking or Swale railway station.

There have been four bridges that have linked the Isle of Sheppey to the mainland, each having to be built to allow passage along the navigable waterway to the Swale.

During the reign of Edward I, according to the historian Charles Igglesden, a bridge connected Sheppey to the mainland at Elmley. It was called the Tremsethg Bridge but was lost in a tidal wave and never replaced.

The second bridge to cross the river Swale (pictured above) was built in 1860, and was a steel rolling lift bridge (working like one of the bascules of Tower Bridge) it was originally worked by hand, but later by electricity.

In 1960 The Kingsferry Bridge was opened, a lifting bridge which was able to lift both the road and the railway line to allow ships to pass beneath, this remains and is the only bridge of its kind in the UK and one of only two in the world.

In July 2006 the Sheppey crossing was opened. This four-lane road bridge is 1.27 km long, and rises to a height of 34.7m above the Swale.

There is room in the cache for small swaps, travel bugs or geocoins.
