Geocache Description:

The Hough Windmill can be approached from several public footpaths in the surrounding area. So rather than tell you where to park and which route to take, I will leave it to you to find the best way to get to the cache area. However, I recommend visiting this cache on a Sunday. On a Sunday the gate is open so it is possible to drive up to the cache area plus the mill opens the doors to the public and entrance is free as is a guided tour.

The landscape still holds evidence of mining over a period of 800 years, the earliest record dating to 1205. Early mining was by quarrying, then by driving adits and then by bell pits. The coal accessible from bell pits was worked out by the 15th century and wooden shafts were sunk to deeper seams, coal and water being extracted by horse gins. Evidence of these three types of working can be seen on the Gorse Field.

Cache is the usual sandwich box containing the usual nick-nacks!

Happy hunting!

***PLEASE NOTE***** Guilded tours of the windmill have now ended for the year and re-open in April. Dont let this put you off though, the walk up to the windmill is still lovely.
